Adoption Process & Fees

Potential adopters may visit the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center during open hours to choose an animal that is available for adoption. Once a specific animal has been decided upon, an application for adoption must be completed and submitted in person to Animal Center staff. All occupants in the residence must visit the animal at the Animal Center to ensure a good match is made. If you are looking for a dog and already have one in your home, staff will ask that you bring your resident canine in to the Animal Center for an introduction with your chosen Animal Center dog prior to the application being approved.
Some adoptions may require additional criteria to ensure the best placement for both the animal and the adopter(s).
Generally, applications take at minimum 24 hours to process. You will be asked to think about your adoption decision overnight and call back the following morning to advise us of your final decision. Once the staff has approved your application to adopt, we will call you and set up an appointment to have you pick up your new family member.
Iowa code law requires all dogs and cats adopted out by a licensed animal shelter to be spayed or neutered.
